Sports teams’ success is determined by the number of titles they win. There are some teams out there that have never experienced the sheer joy of lifting a trophy aloft at the conclusion of an arduous season. Still, others have an almost unnatural ability to finish top of their league or become champions.
Statistically speaking, Rangers are the most successful team in sporting history, courtesy of them winning the Scottish league title on 55 occasions. However, Scottish football is dominated by Rangers and city rivals Celtic, who have won 106 of the 125 titles since the league began; that equates to 85.1% of all titles. Other sports and leagues are more competitive, yet some teams defy the odds and become champions time and time again.
Montreal Canadiens – NHL
The National Hockey League (NHL) is fiercely competitive thanks, in part, to the league’s playoff system that ultimately ends with the coveted Stanley Cup. Hockey fans dream about their beloved team reaching the Stanley Cup finals, and no team has reached more of them than the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens have played in a record 35 Stanley Cups and won a record 24 titles. However, the best online sportsbooks rarely place the Canadiens as favorites for the Stanley Cup because most of the team’s success was between the mid-1940s and 1979.
The Canadiens won their 24th Stanley Cup in 1993 and have only reached the final once since, doing so in 2021 when they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Perhaps the team has turned a corner and will enjoy the success its veteran fans were accustomed to.
Real Madrid – Football
Although Rangers have won their league 55 times, Real Madrid is the most successful football team in Europe thanks to their prowess in cup and European competitions. The Los Blancos have won the La Liga title a record 34 times, the Copa del Rey cup 19 times, and the Supercopa de Espana on 12 occasions.
Those results are awe-inspiring, but it is Real Madrid’s record in Europe that makes them the most successful side. They have four UEFA Super Cup titles, have won the UEFA Cup twice, and no team has more UEFA Champions League trophies than Madrid’s 13.
Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics – NBA
NHL has the Stanley Cup, the NFL has the Super Bowl, and the NBA has the NBA Finals. Currently, two teams are tied for first place in the NBA Finals; both the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have lifted the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy 17 times.
The Celtics have reached the finals 21 times and won 17 of those. Eleven of those titles came between 1957 and 1969, with their last finals victory coming in 2008.
The Lakers have navigated their way to the finals 32 times, winning 17. The bulk of the Lakers’ success came in the 1980s and again in the 2000s, although they were crowned NBA Finals Champions in 2020.
Green Bay Packers – NFL
When it comes to the NFL Super Bowl, the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are tied on six Super Bowls each. However, the Green Bay Packers are the team that has won the most American Football matches since the NFL began.
Including the Playoffs and the Super Bowl, of which the Packers have won four times, the Packers have played 1,462 games and won a record 818 of them. Before you grab your calculators, that record equates to a 57.3% win rate. Only the Dallas Cowboys, with a 57% win rate, come close to the Packers, although they have played 451 fewer games.
The Chicago Bears are the only other NFL team to win 800 games, but their win rate is only 55.8% because they have lost 24 more games and tied four more games than the all-conquering Packers.
