With their last NBA Championship dating back to 1983, it has been a long time since the 76ers last won an NBA Championship.
Being one of the oldest franchises in the NBA, the team has had several prominent Hall of Famers in their squad, including Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Irving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson. The proud team has been on the rise in recent years, but do they have what it takes to take glory home to the City of Brotherly Love?
Looking at the Odds
Last year 76ers was a surprise winner of the Atlantic Division, winning their first division title in 20 years. Being in the same division as the favorites for this year’s NBA title, Brooklyn Nets, the team does not look like they are going to repeat the feat. Still, they are one of the teams that can go far according to the bookmakers, being the team with the 8th lowest odds for a title-winning season. Philadelphia’s betting center is one of the places where you can find the bookmakers with the best odds for each of their games.
Right now, the team sits in second place in the Division behind the Nets. If they keep up their recent form they will qualify through to the playoffs as they are currently sitting in 5th place of the Eastern Conference.
A major reason for the recent improvement of the Sixers has been their acquisition of the Cameroonian player Joel Embiid. In his second season with the team, he helped them qualify for their first playoff campaign in six seasons. Since then, the team has made it through to the post-season four times in a row, they have improved their game and look to extend their role.
This year the four-time all-star is leading the team in points, rebounds, and blocks, averaging more than 27 points per game. This leaves him in fifth place on the scoring leaderboard in the entire league. With Tobias Harris averaging a little more than 18 points per game for the Sixers, Joel Embiid needs to be on top of his game in order to stop the championship drought in Philadelphia.
Ben Simmons – Trade or Play?
The three-time NBA All-star player is yet to play a game this season. After falling out with 76ers coach Doc Rivers the Australian decided that he wanted to be traded before the start of this year’s season. By not showing up for practice and not wanting to play, he is now the most-fined player in NBA history and the saga continues.
A solution is yet to be found and the Sixers would want to trade him for another All-star potential point guard. If the team gets an effective point guard, it could be the last thing that the team needs in order to take the last steps to become a real contender for the title. The problem is that it may be hard to get rid of him, due to his bad behavior, which makes him a boom or bust trade.
With the Sixers, going into the second half of the season, winning 9 of their last 10 games, they should be a contender for the title but will need to make a few trades to raise their level to a championship-winning team.
